About Levee Reform

Despite the massive devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, some Louisiana politicians still don't get it.  They continue to support a broken system favoring their own parochial interests of dispensing political favors ahead of the public interest for secure flood protection.  Hurricane Katrina failed to wash away their shame.

For business to have the confidence to return and residents the will to rebuild, Louisiana must reform its broken system of patronage laden levee boards with a twenty-first century model of oversight.  Levee Reform believes an informed citizenry can proactively affect change towards an improved flood protection system for the New Orleans region.  To paraphrase Thomas Jefferson, let these facts be submitted to a candid world.

The current system of levee management is a proven failure.  Recent "reform" legislation is a canard that does little to improve the current system of flood protection.  A new approach to levee oversight is needed to ensure a safe and secure future for the entire New Orleans Region.

Levee Reform supports these structural changes:

bullet The elimination of political patronage by the appointment of experts knowledgeable of flood control and levee design.

bullet The consolidation of interdependent levee boards into one single, unified entity.

bullet The sale of levee board assets unrelated to flood control.   Funds raised from asset sales can be used to enhance and improve flood protection for South Louisiana.  Extraneous activities, i.e. casino gambling, will no longer distract from the core mission of flood protection.
